Multi-sensory Storytelling: Movement

In last week's blog, we talked about how to help Bible stories  come to life through sounds. This week, we'll explore how to add movement into your lessons!

Movement

Did you know that incorporating movement into learning aids in memory function? Adding movements alongside Bible stories or Bible verses can help embed the knowledge while making it more fun!

This is another great way to engage the senses while telling the Bible story that requires no equipment! You can even encourage students to come up with their own movements, promoting creativity and greater participation.

Adding Movement to Stories

Sometimes it can be difficult for students to sit still throughout learning times. The addition of movement is a fantastic way to give students a sensory break while they hear the Bible story.

Here are some easy ways you can add movement to some specific Bible lessons:

  • Walk around the room to represent Jesus' family traveling to Jerusalem when he was 12 years old.

  • Clap hands to celebrate God saving his people from the Egyptians by splitting the Red Sea.

  • Lay your head down pretending to sleep when talking about the disciples falling asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane.

How does it work with Awe & Wonder's curriculum?

Each week, you'll find a list of recommended items to grab from around your church or home to help you tell that week's story.  Our sensory storytelling chart matches each page of that week's adapted book.  We'll give you suggestions for objects, sounds, movements, and more that relate to that page of the book.

Songs with Motions

We also include a playlist of songs for the month. This is a great way to incorporate movement into your teaching time! Choosing songs with natural motions or just taking time for a dance break to a relevant song can help the Bible story take deeper root.

This is also a great time to use to play scarves we talked about in our first Multi-Sensory Storytelling post!

Sign Language

Another way to incorporate motion is through simple sign language. We include an ASL version of the monthly Bible verse to aid in instruction and memorization. Pair the ASL signs with written language and verbal recitation to provide multiple forms of presentation!
